VILNIUS, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania's basketball club Zalgiris announced on Tuesday that it has named Martin Schiller as the team's new coach.
"I'm extremely excited to become the new head coach in Kaunas. I'm very thankful and very honored to coach this club with so much tradition. The work that has been done with Zalgiris in the last couple of years has been very good, and I want to keep pushing the program, keep pushing ahead," Schiller said in his message to the fans, published on Zalgiris.lt website.
The 38-year old Austrian started his coaching career in 2004, and since 2017 has been working as head coach of the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League, being named the Coach of the Year this season. Schiller has also been an assistant coach for the German national team since 2015.
"We are glad that we found a coach, we believe he is ambitious and modern. He met the team and appreciated the team's lineup that we have. We are looking forward to starting cooperation," Zalgiris director Paulius Motiejunas told a press conference.
According to Motiejunas, Schiller should arrive in Lithuania in mid-August.
Zalgiris and the Austrian coach have agreed on a two-year deal, the team said.
Schiller will replace Sarunas Jasikevicius, who left the Kaunas-based club after four years to join FC Barcelona.
Founded in 1944, Zalgiris is one of the oldest teams in the EuroLeague, and was announced as champion of the 2019-20 Lithuanian Basketball League season which ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 outbreak as the team firmly led the standings. This is its tenth consecutive league championship.
