8,700 runners race in Dead Sea marathon

JERUSALEM, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- About 8,700 runners from 43 countries and regions participated in the annual Dead Sea Marathon on Friday.

Being held along the southern shores of the salt lake in southeastern Israel, a part of the course runs toward the center of the lake along the border embankment between Israel and Jordan, an area usually restricted to security forces and authorized personnel, and opened to the public only on marathon day.

Israel's Dvir Tsuberi won the men's marathon with two hours, 38 minutes and 3 seconds, while fellow Israeli Sarit Hirschberg claimed the women's title in 3:37:50.

The event also featured half-marathon, 50 km, 15 km, 10 km, and 5 km races.
